Music Freshman Seminar

The music department has openings in the Music 87 seminar "Beauty in Operatic Madness." It's a freshman seminar, but they are allowing other students to enroll as well. If you'd like to join, please email Becky Saltzman and she'll give you permission to enroll. Her e-mail is rsaltzma@ucsd.edu. You must include your full name, PID and the 6 digit section ID of the course.

The class only meets four times. There will be NO work outside of class. You just need to bring your curiosity and open minds.

Seminar will meet November 3, 10, 17, 24.

This seminar explores madness as portrayed in European opera, Japanese kabuki, and Chinese kunqu. Mad scenes often allow singers creative freedom in realizing their characters' insanity. What makes a performance chillingly brilliant? This seminar develops attention to interpretive detail.
