Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University Fellowship in Science
By Melinda Rose
The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study is a scholarly community where individuals pursue advanced work across a wide range of academic disciplines, professions, and creative arts. Within this broad purpose, and in recognition of Radcliffe''''''''s historic contributions to the education of women, the Radcliffe Institute sustains a continuing commitment to the stude of women, gender, and society.
Scientists participate in the Radcliffe Fellowship Program both as individual researchers and in small research clusters. Individual science fellows have included molecular biologists studying neurogenesis and biologists investigating the evolution or marine, plant, and bird species; chemical engineers investigating problems like fluid flow; mathematicians studying vortex sheet dynamics; computational biologists; and chemists. Previous clusters have brought together particle and astrophysicists, planetary scientists, mathematicians, and computer scientists.
Eligibility
Radcliffe Institute fellowships are designed to support scholars, scientists, artists, and writers of exceptional promise and demonstrated accomplishment who wish to pursue work in academic and professional fields and in the creative arts. Applications are judged on the quality and significance of the proposed project and the appicant's record of accomplishment and promise. Women and men from across the United States and throughout the world, including developing countries, are encouraged to apply. We seek to build a community of fellows that is diverse in every way. Proposals are accepted from applicants in any field with the receipt of a doctorate or appropriate terminal degree at least two years prior to appointment in the area of the proposed project. Applicants' projects need not focus on gender. Radliffe also welcomes proposals from small groups of scholars who have research interests or projects in common.
Selection Process
Each application is reviewed in a dual-tiered process by peers in the relevant disciplines. Applicants are notified of the results of the selection process in early March 2009.
Terms and Conditions
Stipends, which normally compliment a sabbatical leave salary, are funded up to $65,000 for one year, with an additional small research fund. Support for relocation expenses is provided where relevant.
Fellows receive office space and computer support, including high-speed network access, and they have access to libraries and other resources of Harvard University. The Institute will help scientists, upon request, to be placed in relevant labs or linked to digital resources.
