Annual Engineering Outreach Events

Engineering Exploration (November): Is designed for 400+ high school students interested in engineering. They will tour engineering labs, participate in a hands-on design competition, get to know the various student organizations, and attend presentations by students and faculty.

Future Engineers Program (Fall Qtr.): The Jacobs School Scholars aim to inspire and advise younger students by visiting high schools to provide tips on applying to college and scholarship opportunities, conduct college essay workshops, and share their experience as engineering students.

EnVision (January): Is a fun-filled day to inspire and encourage approximately 200+ high school girls to pursue post-education in the field of engineering. This event is hosted annually by SWE.

MESA Day (February): Is designed to increase the awareness of engineering among San Diego students. The event consists of SDSU and UCSD campus tours as well as a hands-on activity and competition. All students are participants in the MESA program and attend local middle and high schools throughout San Diego.

Enspire (February): Is designed to introduce approximately 400+ middle school students to university-level engineering, via lab tours and a variety of hands-on projects.

San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering (March): Expo Day of the San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering is held at Petco Park. Several Jacobs School student organizations participate each year to showcase engineering to students and the community.

Breakfast with the Deans (April): SHPE, NSBE and SWE hosts a breakfast for incoming Jacobs School freshmen from underrepresented backgrounds. These students and their families have the opportunity to meet with the Deans, faculty, staff and students.

Girls Day Out (May): SPAWAR sponsors this event geared towards 100 middle school girls and their parents. Free workshops for middle-school girls held on college campuses to promote female interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Each workshop includes a female keynote speaker, campus/lab tours, and activity stations. Female college and high-school students provide team leadership.

SHPE Middle School Conference (May): This conference is hosted annually by SHPE and involves tours, presentations, guest speakers and a social hour/lunch to introduce and excite high school students about the field of engineering and the Jacobs School of Engineering.

Family Day (June): Is an event designed for families with middle and high school students. There are a host of hands-on engineering activities, as well as discussions pertaining to the UCSD admission process. The families include Jacobs and alumni, as well as families from underrepresented communities.

Seismic Outreach Program (Fall, Winter, Spring Qtrs.): SCSE hosts 6th grade students throughout San Diego County to give them the opportunity to learn about earthquake science and engineering through classroom presentations, KNEX competition, and field trips.
