Data-collecting Surfboard in Action
[02:00]
Watch UC San Diego mechanical engineering undergraduates give a tour of the surfboard they outfitted with a computer and sensors -- one step toward structural engineering Ph.D. student Benjamin Thompson’s quest to develop the science of surfboards. The MAE undergraduates installed a computer and sensors on a surfboard and recorded the speed of the water flowing beneath the board. While the students surfed, the onboard computer sent water velocity information to a laptop on shore.

NanoEngineers Print and Test Chemical Sensors on Elastic Wai
[02:00]
Chemical sensors printed directly on elastic underwear waistbands retained their sensing abilities even after engineers stretched, folded and pulled at the chemical-sensing printable electrodes – sensors that could one day be incorporated into intelligent “hospital-on-a-chip” systems. This work, funded by the U.S. Office of Naval Research, is led by professor Joseph Wang, from the Department of NanoEngineering at the University of California, San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering.

Sky Imager from Professor Jan Kleissl Lab at UC San Diego
[01:00]
On the UC San Diego campus, advanced sky imager technology is applied to get a fine-grained picture of local clouds. Real-time images of the La Jolla skies produce solar output forecasts for 1 MW of dispersed solar PV that will be utilized by a microgrid scheduler/optimizer to enable supply, storage and load adjustments based on dynamic market price signals.
