The Moxie Center
The Moxie Center was created in 2012 by a gift from The Moxie Foundation to the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego.
Our mission is twofold:
- To motivate, educate and mentor students to "Dream, Design, Develop" their engineering ideas into commercial products
- To add entrepreneurial practice to the undergraduate engineering program
Though based in the Jacobs School of Engineering, we are open to students from across the campus. We collaborate with other programs and units at UCSD to provide experiential educational and networking opportunities to all students. Startup teams in the Moxie Incubator have included students from biology, political science, chemistry, economics, cognitive science and the Rady School of Management, as well as all engineering departments.
Moxie Center events are open to everyone. The Moxie Incubator program is open to any UCSD student teams working on their own ideas.
We currently operate two lab facilities: Moxie Center A in the CSE building (B210), and Moxie Center B in the MAE building (EBU2 333). Our offices are in Moxie Center B, and we are normally open 9a-5p on weekdays. Teams admitted to the Incubator Program have 24/7 access to the facilities.
We employ several undergraduate assistants to help mentor student teams, provide guidance in using tools and equipment both in the Moxie Center and in other campus facilities, and assist in running other Moxie Center programs.
The Moxie Foundation, founded by Irwin Zahn in 1998, is dedicated to enriching and empowering individuals and communities by advancing educational achievement and entrepreneurial success, personal health, and the environment. In 2012, the Moxie Foundation brought this vision to campus through a gift to UC San Diego to create the Moxie Center for Student Entrepreneurship. Today, the Moxie Center strives to motivate, encourage, and grow student entrepreneurship.
We thank Irwin and Florence Zahn and the Moxie Foundation for their generosity and vision in establishing the Moxie Center at UC San Diego.
Students who participate in the many opportunities available through the Moxie Center, including state-of-the-art prototyping facilities, engineering and business mentoring, entrepreneurship coursework, grants, and more, will contribute significantly to the culture of entrepreneurship at UC San Diego and well beyond.
Thanks to this gift, our students now have a place to "dream, design, and develop" and let their imaginations soar!
