1. Software Accessibility Project
Did you know that a person who is blind can make almost full use of a computer? Did you know that the combination of keyboard shortcuts and text-to-speech software can provide a similar experience? Welcome to the world of Accessibility.
Cisco is seeking to hire a team of 2-3 interns that will initially be trained on the basics of making software accessible to people with disabilities. This will cover areas of varying needs, including low-vision, blind, hard-of-hearing, deaf, and mobility impaired. Additionally, the interns will learn how to use WebKing, a commercial testing tool, to evaluate the accessibility of software code. The next step will include evaluation of the accessibility of key internal software tools used by Cisco employees to do their jobs, such as expense reporting, time/vacation reporting, opening IT/HR support cases, etc. After identifying the accessibility gaps int eh software tools, the team will assist in making recommendations on how to improve the accessibility, including areas such as software code changes and user interface look/feel changes. The team will also perform evaluations of cost/benefit analysis, industry bench marking and comparison analysis, and productivity impacts. Although this project is defined, each member of the team will take part in determining the path of this project. Looking for 1-2 Computer Science students (undergrad or grad) and 1 MBA student. Students must have a strong background in the degree they are pursuing, collaborate with teammates and colleagues, and be highly motivated. Essential Skills: CS intern required skills: Knowledge in web software, HTML coding, Java, JavaScript, C/C++ MBA intern: Undergraduate degree in SW (CS/CE) preferred. 1. Team at Facebook

Facebook is seeking Software Engineering interns to join the Product team. These positions will help build the next generation systems behind Facebook's products, create web applications that reach millions of people, and build high volume servers. Responsibilities Include: - Code highly efficient and scalable software using primarily C++ and Java - Create web applications using primarily PHP - Implement web interfaces using XHTML, CSS, and Javascript - Build report interfaces and data feeds Required Skills: - Working towards a BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science or Related Field. - Expertise with C++ and/or Java - Knowledge of perl or PHP or python - Knowledge of relational databases and SQL, preferably MySQL and Oracle - High levels of creativity and quick problem solving capabilities. 1. Intelligent System for Energy Management
In addition to applying to the Team Internship Program (TIP), you must also apply to the Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP) website to be considered for this project. The last day to submit an application will be January 8, 2010. References and transcripts are due on January 11, 2010 by 5:30 PM Eastern Standard Time (EST). http://nreip.asee.org . The Participating Lab that is hosting these teams is listed as Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (San Diego, CA).
SPAWAR is seeking 2 graduate level students from the Computer Science or Electrical and Computer Engineering Departments. This project will entail development of energy management algorithms created at SPAWAR and their program realization by the two involved students. Essential Skills: - Programming in Java and Software Engineering - Understanding and experience with data structures Desirable Skills: - Coursework in Artificial Intelligence is useful, but not mandatory - Verbal and written communication - Knowledge of energy distribution is useful All applicants must be US Citizens.
