UCSD rests high atop the bluffs of La Jolla, just minutes from the Pacific Ocean with its postcard-perfect beaches and breathtaking sunsets. San Diego boasts over 70 miles of beaches and one of the world's best climates. You can move from the mountains to the desert within a few hours and enjoy a year-round active lifestyle.

 

UCSD is located at the hub of San Diego's burgeoning high technology and biotechnology industries. According to the Milken Institute, San Diego has one of the broadest and most balanced arrays of technology clusters in any metropolitan area of the U.S. And because of the Jacobs School's partnership with industry, our students have the opportunity to conduct research applied to real world industry challenges.

  • San Diego has the third largest concentration of bioscience companies in the United States.
  • San Diego companies are central to building the wireless world and redefining the ways in which we communicate. There are already about 500 successful telecommunication firms in the area including, Verizon Wireless, T–Mobile USA, Inc., and Cox Communications. And there are 100 new ones expected to emerge each year.
  • There are 1,253 software and computer services firms including, the Headquarters of Lockhead Martin, a branch of Northrop Grumman Defense Mission System, Inc., as well as a branch of Xerox Corporation.
  • According to Kaplan Newsweek Careers, San Diego is a hot spot for careers in information technology. The region boasts a diverse and vibrant information technology industry, evidenced by the success of leading edge manufacturers like Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Cymer and AMCC.
  • More than 140 defense and space companies in San Diego employ over 19,000 people. The region holds a national "Megaport" designation by the Navy, and is home to the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWAR), with an annual operating budget of $4 billion.
  • San Diego is second to none in high-tech research, design, and manufacturing for the golf industry.
  • San Diego is a bi-national region, sharing a border with Mexico, and is considered one of the best areas to manufacture and produce technology products. This region has been called "The Pacific Rim gateway to NAFTA" with access to the American, Asian, and Mexican markets.
