Nuno VasconcelosAssociate Professor, Electrical & Computer Engineering
Statistical signal processing, computer vision, machine learning, multimedia Professor Vasconcelos' research interests are at the intersection of three overarching areas of study: signal processing, computer vision, and pattern recognition. The main goal is to provide computers with the ability to understand sophisticated media types, such as images, video, audio, speech, or DNA sequences. Such understanding will enable the design of systems that can precisely search and organize large databases of such signals. Possible applications include non-text extensions to current web search engines, devices for personalized access to large video repositories (e.g. movie or newscast databases), retrieval systems that rely on user profiles to retrieve and summarize the content of interest, clinical systems that search databases of previous case studies as an aid to diagnosis, or gene sequencing and identification systems.
