Extremum Seeking Control:
From Bacteria Seeking Nutrients to Gain-Hungry Lasers
Extremum seeking (ES) is a method for model-free real-time optimization of dynamic systems, whose origins trace back to biology, where cells (including bacteria) use ES to search for nutrients or light. Dormant through the decades dominated by model-based optimization, ES was revived in the late 1990s by Professor Krstic. His and his students' advances in ES methodology have led to applications of ES in engines, fusion, accelerators, lasers, wind turbines, photovoltaics, autonomous vehicles, and other applications where ES is an alternative to manual tuning of setpoints and system parameters. Krstic will review the history, basic ideas, and new applications of extremum seeking.
