Jacobs School Commitment to Diversity, Climate and Inclusion

UC DiversityUC Diversity

"The diversity of the people of California has been the source of innovative ideas and creative accomplishments throughout the state's history into the present. Diversity – a defining feature of California's past, present, and future – refers to the variety of personal experiences, values, and worldviews that arise from differences of culture and circumstance. Such differences include race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, language, abilities/disabilities, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and geographic region, and more."

The Jacobs School Commitment to Diversity and Culture of Inclusion

The development of engineering innovation for our global community requires the collaboration of talented individuals who have diverse perspectives shaped by their unique experiences.

Engineering as a discipline has long suffered from a lack of diversity. One of the highest stated priorities for the Jacobs School of Engineering is to increase the diversity of our faculty and student body, and to foster a culture of inclusion, excellence and respect.

Recently UC San Diego experienced incidents which led the campus – and the UC system as a whole – to re-examine its work in the area of campus diversity. Although the Jacobs School has long had an active culture of inclusion, we are redoubling our efforts to build a better "climate."

This climate of excellence, inclusion and diversity was the subject of our June 2010 Jacobs School Faculty Retreat, and as a result we have created a school-wide Diversity Advisory Council. This website is dedicated to sharing the work of the Council, and the efforts of our entire Jacobs School community to promote an inclusive environment. Read more...
