Mandy Butler, Ph.D., received her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Rochester, and has since worked in both industry and academia. Before coming to UCSD in 2002, Mandy worked in drug discovery in the biotech industry, focusing on developing drugs for the treatment of diabetes and obesity. Mandy now teaches and develops curriculum for the lab courses offered to Biology majors at UCSD, including Biochemical Techniques and Recombinant DNA Techniques. Mandy also oversees the operations of undergraduate teaching laboratories and coordinates the Biotech Internship Program for the Division of Biological Sciences.
Stephanie Mel received her Ph.D. from the University of California San Francisco in 1992, where she studied protein structure and function in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics. Her post-doctoral work at Harvard Medical School was in the field of Microbiology and Molecular Biology where she carried out studies on the organism that causes cholera. Since 1998, she has been teaching in the Department of Biology at UCSD. Her courses include Recombinant DNA Techniques Laboratory, Structural Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Multicellular Life, and The Biology of Plagues.
