GENERAL DESCRIPTION of POSITION:

Position Title: Bioinformatics Scientist

    As part of a scientific team focused on algal genomics and strain development, the individual will be responsible for: 1) Analyzing eukaryotic, prokaryotic and metagenomic datasets to help guide laboratory experiments, 2) Predicting biochemical pathways based on functional annotation and comparative genomics, 3) Analyzing ribosomal RNA and other phylogenetic marker data using standard software, and 4) Assisting experimental researchers with other data analysis tasks

SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS:

    1) At least 3 years (PhD) or 5 years (MSc) of experience in analyzing and interpreting complex genomic datasets. 2)Must be familiar with publicly available bioinformatics tools and sites (e.g., BLAST, HMMs, NCBI ENtrez, JGI IMG etc, phylogenetic software). 3)Requires skills in comparative genomics, microbial and metagenome annotation. 4) Ability to conduct and perform collaborative research and effectively interact with a broad range of colleagues is a must.

PREFERRED SKILLS:

    1) Expertise in lipid metabolism and/or algal biology is highly desirable. 2)Experience with SQL and Python/Perl would be advantageous.
