Teams in Engineering Services (TIES)

Teams in Engineering Service (TIES) - As early as their first year, students can gain practical experience while serving their community in the TIES academic program. Student teams design, build, and deploy technology solutions for San Diego non-profit organizations. Projects range from sensor-based smart furnishings for seniors in an assisted living community to adapted toys for children with cerebral palsy. Learn more »

Class Design Projects - Design and teamwork are woven throughout our curricula from the freshmen to senior year. Students get a taste of engineering design through introductory courses and class competitions such as the annual battle of the robots in MAE 3 or conceptual structural design competition in SE 103. At the senior level, CSE125 student teams design and develop an interactive video game, while students involved in capstone industry-sponsored design courses (ECE191, MAE 156) build prototypes which often end up integrated into real products.

Student Organization Design Competitions - Jacobs School student teams pit their engineering skills against other top universities in national design competitions. From building and racing a Formula car, flying an unmanned radio-controlled airplane or floating a concrete canoe to constructing a steel bridge in under 10 minutes, our students work together to apply their knowledge to fun and exciting engineering challenges.
