Associate Dean: Charles Tu

Associate Dean Charles Tu oversees school wide curricula accreditation and enhancement. He also oversees the Teams in Engineering Service program with Associate Dean Jeanne Ferrante, and is particularly interested in expanding activities with alumni. Tu is a professor of electrical and computer engineering, and served as chair of ECE from 1999 to 2003. During his tenure, he helped recruit 11 professors, initiated alumni relations activities, and created a research review for undergraduates.

Tu's research interests include novel III-V compound semiconductor materials and band gap-engineered structures for electronic and optoelectronic applications. He has authored or co-authored more than 300 journal papers, and is one of four editors in- chief of Solid State Electronics . Active in international conferences, Tu has served as a visiting professor at universities in Taiwan and Japan , and is an adjunct professor at Korea 's Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology. He is a Fellow of IEEE, the American Physical Society, and the AVS Science and Technology Society. Tu joined the UCSD faculty in 1988. He worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories from 1980 to 1988 (MTS, Distinguished MTS in 1987), and earned his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1978.
