ABOUT US

As entities of the University of California , LANL and UCSD have built upon a partnership that marries the unique technical resources of University's cutting edge research and education with the excellence and national security mission of the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The programs are designed to help prepare, recruit, and retain a technical workforce for the Laboratory, to provide researchers with opportunities to collaborate and solve problems of importance to national security and to extend opportunities for the transfer of scientific discovery that may lead to enhanced entrepreneurial vigor of the region. The program will leverage the resources of both institutions to the benefit of students and the regions.

UC San Diego is a powerful magnet for those seeking a fresh, next-generation approach to education and research. Since its founding four decades ago, UCSD -- one of the ten campuses in the world-renowned University of California system -- has rapidly achieved the status as one of the top institutions in the nation for higher education and research. UCSD's interdisciplinary ethos and tradition of innovation and risk-taking, underlie its research strength and ability to recruit top scholars and students. This is most notable through the Centers of Excellence such as CalIT2, The von Liebig Center, San Diego Super Computer Center. Directing this collaborative effort on behalf of UCSD is the Jacobs School of Engineering, a premier institution in the midst of vibrant growth. Its strategy is to lead in targeted research areas critical to national technological leadership, the regional economic prosperity, and the quality of life for people everywhere. Bioengineering, earthquake and renewal engineering, energy, high performance computing, information technology, networking and communications, and materials are among our strengths.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is a Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory, managed by the University of California . The Laboratory is one of the largest multidisciplinary institutions in the world. It is the largest institution and the largest employer in Northern New Mexico . Approximately one-third of the Laboratory's technical staff members are physicists, one-fourth are engineers, one-sixth are chemists and materials scientists, and the remainder work in mathematics and computational science, biological science, geoscience, and other disciplines. Professional scientists and students also come to Los Alamos as visitors to participate in scientific projects. Our staff collaborates with universities and industry in both basic and applied research to develop resources for the future.
